# Time Commitment for Self-Determination Program vs. Traditional Services: What to Expect

![A close-up of a hand holding a pen to paper while flipping through a stack of documents.](https://neuronav.org/hubfs/73.png)

For individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, California’s Self-Determination program (SDP) offers the chance to design a more personalized, flexible support plan. But with that flexibility often comes a common concern: *How much time will this take?*

In this article, we’ll break down the typical time commitment for self-determination, how it compares to traditional regional center services, and what kinds of support can help you manage the process more smoothly.

## Time Commitment: Self-Determination vs. Traditional Services

One of the biggest differences between the [Self-Determination Program (SDP) and traditional regional center services](https://neuronav.org/self-determination-blog/does-sdp-differ-from-traditional-regional-center-services) is the time commitment, especially at the beginning. With traditional services, families typically meet with a case manager, receive a list of pre-approved providers, and start services relatively quickly. Most of the coordination and paperwork are handled by the regional center.

SDP, on the other hand, requires a much more hands-on approach. The first step is completing the mandatory self-determination program orientation, which may be offered monthly or quarterly by your Regional Center. From there, families move through several key steps: person-centered planning, developing a spending plan, getting budget approval, and hiring service providers.

For most, the Self-Determination Program time frame from orientation to launching services ranges from three to six months—though this can vary depending on availability and support.

While SDP takes more time up front, it also gives families greater control over services, staffing, and budgeting. For many, the flexibility and personalization are well worth the initial investment of time. That said, it’s important to go in with realistic expectations and to know that support is available to help manage the process.

## How Long Does It Take to Start the Self-Determination Program?

The Self-Determination Program timeline varies based on factors such as Regional Center responsiveness, availability of facilitators, and [family readiness](https://neuronav.org/families). However, most people can expect [starting SDP](https://neuronav.org/self-determination-blog/advice-starting-sdp) to take three to six months, from initial interest to approved services.

Here’s a general overview of the California SDP timeline:

- **SDP Orientation:** All participants are required to attend an official orientation, which typically lasts 2–3 hours. This is the entry point into the self-determination process and is required before moving forward.

- **Person-Centered Planning:** After orientation, the participant works with an independent facilitator (IF) to identify life goals and needs. This process takes time. It may involve multiple meetings, family input, and vision-building conversations.

- **Budget Certification and Spending Plan:** Once planning is complete, the individual's budget is calculated based on past regional center services. A spending plan is then developed, detailing how that budget will be used to meet their goals. This step can take one to two months.

- **Launching Services:** Families may begin interviewing and hiring providers, finding staff, or contracting with community-based services. This can take several weeks to a few months, depending on how customized the plan is.

Altogether, starting the Self-Determination Program requires thoughtful coordination, but it leads to a highly personalized support plan built around the individual’s vision for their future.

## Getting Support: Independent Facilitators and FMS

You don’t have to figure it out all alone. Many families reduce stress and time by working with professionals who specialize in guiding people through SDP.

- **Independent Facilitators (IFs):** An IF can walk you through every step, from person-centered planning to finding providers and navigating paperwork. They help simplify the process and keep things moving smoothly.

- **Financial Management Services (FMS):** Your FMS handles payroll, billing, and budget tracking. You’re required to enlist the help of one, but choosing the right FMS can significantly ease the ongoing time burden.
