Advocating in SDP: Practical Tools for Confident Conversations
June 11, 2026 at 12pm
If you've ever felt unsure about raising a concern, stayed quiet when something didn't feel right, or worried that speaking up might make things harder for you down the road, you're not alone.
Advocating for yourself in SDP can feel like a tightrope walk. Maybe you know what you need but aren't sure how to ask for it. Or maybe you're still figuring out what's possible and don't know where to start. Either way, you also know the relationships with your Regional Center, your FMS, and your service providers matter. When you're not sure how to bring something up without creating friction, it's easy to let it go. Even when staying engaged is the better move for everyone involved.
The good news is that advocacy doesn't have to feel like conflict. There are ways to ask hard questions, request changes, and communicate clearly about what matters to you while keeping the relationships intact. It's a skill. And like any skill, it gets easier when you have the right tools.
What You'll Learn
- What you can reasonably ask for in SDP, and why asking isn't the same as being difficult
- Language and framing tools you can use in your next Regional Center meeting, IPP conversation, or spending plan discussion
- How to approach advocacy in a way that feels less overwhelming and more like a normal part of participating in the program
- What escalation options exist within the system and when it makes sense to use them
Who Should Attend
This webinar is for anyone in California's Self-Determination Program (or exploring whether SDP is the right fit) who wants to feel more confident navigating conversations with their Regional Center, FMS, or service providers.
Whether you know what you want but aren't sure how to ask for it, or you're still figuring out what's possible, this session will give you practical tools to participate more confidently.
