Where it All Began: Kelsey’s Story
Kelsey Flynn O’Connor was a disabled woman who advocated relentlessly for accessibility and community. She communicated by using modified American Sign Language (ASL) and loved to make people laugh.
Kelsey inspired countless people with her passion for life. It’s often said that her favorite sign was “more” — more of the good things in life, more possibilities, and more opportunities.
The Kelsey is an organization that she co-founded before she passed away in 2018. They carry on her legacy through advocacy and collaboration with housing developers to create more accessible, affordable disability housing.
Introducing The Kelsey: Unprecedented Advocacy
The Kelsey serves as a co-developer for housing projects designed to meet the needs of various incomes and ability levels. The communities they help create offer middle and low-income housing. They’re also a safe and inclusive option for those who need disability housing assistance.
People with disabilities often have limited options when it comes to housing. Accessible, comfortable, affordable housing isn’t commonplace. The Kelsey hopes to change that.
By supporting the development of housing that prioritizes the needs of diverse communities, The Kelsey helps set an example for what a more inclusive world could look like.
Inclusive Design Standards
The Kelsey has established inclusive design standards that make their communities ideal for those with and without disabilities. Individuals with various ability levels can move and exist comfortably in these spaces thanks to thoughtful planning and organization.
Their design standards don’t focus on specific diagnoses. Instead, they consider the physical and cognitive impact that a person’s condition might have.
Designing communal and private living areas with things like visibility, acoustics, and degrees of mobility in mind, The Kelsey is setting a new, higher bar for what inclusive spaces should be.
Redefining Housing for Adults with Disabilities
The Kelsey’s collaborative efforts with developers have resulted in great strides for adult disability housing, with even more projects in the works. Below are some of the notable projects that The Kelsey has helped bring to life.
